Hotel Zoo Berlin

A Century of Glamour on the Kurfürstendamm

Opened as a private residence in 1891 and converted into a hotel two decades later, Hotel Zoo Berlin has been one of Kurfürstendamm’s most coveted addresses for well over a century. In the 1950s it served as the VIP hotel for the Berlin International Film Festival, a haunt for Grace Kelly, Sophia Loren, and their ilk, and that silver-screen glamour has never quite left. Today the interiors are the work of American designers Dayna Lee and Ted Berner: a long jade-green carpet woven with leopards leads to a lobby of soaring 22-foot ceilings, double-height windows, and a glassed-in fireplace below an immense chandelier. Tom Dixon wing chairs, oversized red velvet sofas, and leather club chairs complete the scene.

The 141 rooms and suites carry an Art Deco sensibility throughout, with velvet and leather furnishings, platform beds, gleaming hardwood floors, and plush area rugs, with each room laid out differently. The two Penthouse Suites occupy an altogether different stratosphere, outfitted with George Smith furnishings in fuchsia and pink, double-sided fireplaces, and in one case a private balcony overlooking the boulevard.

At street level, Grace Restaurant draws a devoted local crowd alongside hotel guests, while the speakeasy-style Grace Bar with its exposed brick and red velvet fills up on weekends when DJs take the floor. Come summer, the rooftop bar opens above the city with views that stretch across the skyline. The The hotel’s position on Ku’damm, Berlin’s finest shopping boulevard, puts the best of the city’s retail, galleries, and cultural life right at the door.

Berlin's Best View, Cocktail in Hand

Seven floors above Kurfürstendamm, the Rooftop at Hotel Zoo Berlin has earned its reputation as the most beautiful terrace in the city. Designed by Dayna Lee with the same confident hand that shaped the interiors below, the space blends a lounge area, a full bar, and the Grace Garden, an open-air retreat where every sunset over the Berlin skyline becomes a proper occasion. Cocktails, champagne, and unobstructed rooftop views make it an easy place to linger well into the evening. Open May to September; guests must be 18 or over to access the terrace.

Grace: A Restaurant with a Point of View

Styled after a New York townhouse, Grace Restaurant brings a cosmopolitan sensibility to Ku'damm dining. Dayna Lee's interiors set a sophisticated stage with soaring ceilings, white tablecloths, and green velvet and leather seating, framing a menu that borrows freely from Asian and European traditions. At its helm is chef Martin Bruhn, whose exploratory travels to food hotspots around the world inform an ever-evolving menu that has positioned Grace as one of Berlin's most talked-about restaurants. Open Tuesday to Thursday from 7pm, Friday and Saturday from 6pm.

A Stage for Berlin's Cultural Life

Beyond the restaurant and bar, Hotel Zoo Berlin hosts a regular programme of events that gives the hotel a lively social side. Expect live music evenings, seasonal menus, and occasional cultural collaborations, the kind of low-key programming that makes a hotel feel like a genuine part of the city rather than just a place to sleep. Check the events calendar before you arrive to see what's on.

Rooms & Suites

The hotel’s 141 rooms and suites are arranged across a variety of configurations, each designed with its own distinct character. Art Deco detailing runs throughout: velvet, leather, platform beds, and gleaming hardwood floors, while generous proportions ensure a sense of ease. Petit rooms start at around 200 square feet and offer everything you need without excess; Studio Suites step up to 645 square feet with separate living and sleeping areas. Only the suites offer freestanding tubs. At the top, the Ku’Damm Suite and The Suite are in a category of their own: sprawling penthouses with George Smith furnishings in fuchsia and pink, double-sided fireplaces, and skyline views that remind you exactly where you are.

Verdict

Hotel Zoo Berlin earns its prestige not through bluster but through accumulated conviction. Over a century of glamour has been refined into something that feels both lived-in and genuinely covetable. The Hollywood redesign has added lustre without sacrificing soul: the lobby remains a theatrical space worth pausing in, the rooftop is the kind of setting that makes evenings extend of their own accord, and Grace Restaurant draws a Berlin crowd that isn't easily impressed. On Kurfürstendamm, the city's most elegant avenue, this is the address that makes the most sense.

Definitely our favorite place to stay in Berlin. Great stylish atmosphere, very professional, friendly staff which fulfills your wishes before you expressed them. Location is very central on Ku'damm with subway station in front of the door and trainstation around the corner. Night in the bar over the weekend is a must. Great party! Rooms are great and comfortable!

A really cool hotel in a good location. The decor has been really well designed in an Alice in Wonderland type, quirky manner in the lobby area. The rooms are an ok size, great views from the balcony and all the staff were great for the whole week.
