A Serene Boutique Retreat Hidden Behind Historic Walls
Wilmina Hotel is one of Berlin’s most distinctive boutique
properties, set within a former courthouse and women’s prison in
Charlottenburg. The building has been sensitively transformed
into a peaceful retreat surrounded by gardens and courtyards.
Rooms are minimalist and light-filled, designed to emphasise
calm, natural materials, and a sense of quiet reflection. The
atmosphere is deliberately restrained, offering a sharp contrast
to the city beyond its walls.
With a spa, restaurant, and garden terraces, Wilmina feels
intimate and contemplative while remaining close to Kantstraße’s
vibrant dining scene. It is ideal for guests seeking privacy,
design clarity, and a deeply unique Berlin experience.
Lovis and Wilmina's Own Bakery
Chef Sophia Rudolph's Lovis restaurant reimagines traditional cuisine with seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, set within a garden-surrounded dining room. The Lotta Day Bar offers curated wines and craft cocktails alongside homemade delicacies, while Wilmina Brot, the hotel's own natural sourdough bakery, delivers freshly baked bread each morning using time-honoured fermentation methods. A complimentary lounge with fine coffee and fresh fruits rounds out the offering.
From Prison to Urban Sanctuary
Wilmina inhabits a remarkable 1896 ensemble that once served as a criminal courthouse and women's prison for nearly nine decades. Grüntuch Ernst Architects transformed the site by reversing its spatial logic, turning cells of isolation into light-filled, connected living spaces. Original cell doors remain as powerful historical artifacts. The project earned both the Berlin Architecture Prize and the German Sustainability Prize for Architecture.
Garden Lofts and the Penthouse
For extended stays or those seeking a more residential feel, Wilmina's light-flooded apartments range from 80 to 246 square metres. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame verdant garden views, while private kitchens and COCO-MAT beds crafted from natural materials create a refined home away from home. The crowning Penthouse offers breathtaking vistas from multiple balconies, with direct access to the hotel's sauna, seasonal rooftop pool, and billiard room.
Rooms & Suites
At Wilmina Hotel, thoughtfully crafted design meets serene
comfort. Light-filled rooms are defined by a calming aesthetic,
featuring natural, high-quality materials that create a sense of
quiet refinement. Rest comes effortlessly on luxurious, handmade
COCO-MAT beds crafted from natural elements, while bathrooms
invite relaxation with premium St. Pauls body care products by
Frama.
The accommodations range from cosy,
intelligently designed rooms to spacious Garden View rooms
overlooking the hotel’s enchanting ivy-clad garden. Elevated
living awaits in the top-floor two-bedroom Suites with expansive
glazing, while the Garden Suite, the hotel’s largest, offers a
generous living area, refined furnishings, and a kitchenette,
providing an elegant retreat immersed in tranquility.
Verdict
“ Wilmina Hotel inhabits a story that most hotels could only invent: an 1896 courthouse and women's prison in Charlottenburg, converted with such care that the original fabric feels like an asset rather than a constraint. Chef Sophia Rudolph's Lovis restaurant, the in-house bakery, and the garden loft apartments make it a stay worth lingering in. It appeals to guests who want Berlin's character without its noise, and who find hotels with an actual past more interesting than those with a constructed aesthetic.
Incredible spot in a quieter neighborhood of berlin, nestled in an old women's prison that has been refurbished into a boutique hotel. Staff was lovely, food and breakfasts were wonderful and quiet, and I took great advantage of the gratis coffee and pastries in the kitchen.
A very cute hotel in charlottenburg. The staff was extremely kind and the facilities were always in pristine condition. This is a new style concept for hotels (remodeling but with preservation in mind) and has won architectural awards and you can see why once checked in. The gym, sauna, and pool are all on a roof and a quiet little area to relax.
A boutique city hotel that was remodeled in 2022 with 44 rooms. The architecture was designed with love and great attention to detail. This is not only a city hotel but a great guest experience that is not only function but very comfortable and has a very special charm; rare for a city hotel.
From the moment I arrived, I felt truly welcomed. A special highlight was the in-room tea station, discovering a Fellow teapot and a curated selection of teas from Tea&Paper was such a delightful surprise! The rooftop, pool, and open kitchen stocked with fresh water and fruits added a luxurious touch to my stay.
I would say this is a newly perfect hotel with a surprisingly nice space, room, design and cleanliness. As I wouldn’t spoil your interest by talking too much but to tell it’s full of surprise like rooftop swimming pool, a hidden garden, nice living room, kitchen and gym etc. All have fine and design details with pleasant smell. Will visit again for sure!
